Just Look Over Your Shoulder

12/5/14

As we move into the first days of December and the onset of winter, we hit one of those bumps in the road that life throws at you and it causes us all to take a step back for a moment and reflect.

We lost a family member to death and the surprise, the shock, the pain that hits one is almost too much to bear. The things that keep us all from totally losing it is the responsibility that we have to parents, spouses, children and friends. We want and need to provide for them as much as they want and need to provide for us.

But there is something special about fathers and daughters. There is a bond that mothers and daughters, mothers and sons, fathers and sons, don’t quite embrace. It’s an unspoken thing. I’m not exactly sure how to put my finger on it, but it’s present, it is real and we can feel it.

The father/daughter relationship is one that loves, is kind, is always supportive and he provides the backbone for the life that is able to be lived. It is the untold, caring, respect and unrequited love of the father/daughter relationship that sets it apart from any other in the family. This commentary is not in any way to diminish the other relations, it is just to illustrate that it is different.

Maybe it can be summed up by, “Just look over your shoulder, I’ll be there, always”.That line is from a song by Phil Collins, “You’ll Be in My Heart”. Listen to it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=git6DCXSqjE  It is simply outstanding.

It will sum up the father/daughter relationship and to that we thank you Joe for sharing your life with all of us.  We honor you as we celebrate your life by the lessons you taught to all of us as family, friends, but most importantly as siblings. We ask that God bless you and keep you until we meet again.
