The Ephrata Area School District is seeking a dedicated and experienced Swimming Head Coach to lead and develop our swimming program. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the sport, strong coaching and leadership skills, and the ability to create a positive, safe, and supportive team environment. The Head Coach will play an important role in developing student-athletes both in and out of the pool.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement effective training plans and practice sessions to improve athletes' technique, conditioning, confidence, and overall performance.
- Create meet strategies and lead the team during competitions, making timely decisions that support individual and team success.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and guidance to assistant coaches and student-athletes.
- Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, respect, accountability, and a positive team culture.
- Coordinate practice schedules, competitions, team meetings, transportation needs, and other program logistics in collaboration with the Athletic Department.
- Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents/guardians, assistant coaches, school personnel, officials, and pool/facility staff.
- Monitor student-athlete progress and provide constructive feedback to support individual development.
- Maintain accurate team records and ensure required eligibility, participation, and athletic documentation is completed.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of student-athletes during practices, competitions, travel, and all team activities, including adherence to pool safety procedures and emergency protocols.
- Maintain compliance with all Ephrata Area School District, Lancaster-Lebanon League, District III, PIAA, and applicable pool/facility rules, regulations, and policies.
Qualifications:
- Previous coaching experience in swimming at the high school, college, club, or comparable level is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of competitive swimming techniques, training principles, meet procedures, and rules.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, motivate student-athletes, and build positive relationships with families and school personnel.
- Leadership qualities that inspire student-athletes to grow both athletically and personally.
- Ability to work collaboratively with assistant coaches, the Athletic Department, school administration, and pool/facility personnel.
- Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification is preferred.
- Must complete and maintain all required PIAA, Pennsylvania Department of Education, and District coaching education, rules interpretation, health and safety, and child abuse recognition trainings, as applicable.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
2. Has previous successful coaching experience in wrestling.
3. Must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time, must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
4. Must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
REPORTS TO:
The Athletic Director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation or the head coach contingent upon position.
JOB GOAL:
To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. At the same time, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes. To upgrade his/her knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, consultation, etc. To support fellows coaches and grow the program.
GENERAL:
1. The success of athletic programs has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. The public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.
2. The position includes other unusual aspect such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments.
3. It is the express intent of this job posting to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by PIAA and supports their implementation.
2. Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations.
3. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
4. Helps to establish the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught.
5.Helps to facilitate clinics.
6. Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.
7. Performs such other duties which may be assigned by the Athletic Director.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:
1. Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees using scheduling system and open channels of communication.
2. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
3. Recommends policy, method or procedural changes.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Serves as a mentor to each athlete to promote the development and demonstration in student athletes the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
2. Gives constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
3. By his/her presence at all practices games and while traveling, provides assistance, guidance and safeguards for each participant.
4. Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians.
5. Assists athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.
FINANCE AND EQUIPMENT:
1. Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.
2. Monitors equipment rooms, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisition equipment.
3. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
4. Examines locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
5. Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty.
6. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.
