Penn State Schuylkill seeks a Director of Athletics and Recreation (AD) to join our team of dedicated professionals. Reporting to the Director of Student Affairs, the AD leads a team of 3 full-time staff members, 15 part-time coaches, and over 120 student-athletes who compete on 11 intercollegiate teams. This position is responsible for the management and growth of the athletic and intramural programs, works closely with others in Student Affairs and across campus to recruit and support academically qualified student-athletes and to raise funds to support the programs. This position manages the athletic budget, recruits and supervises the coaching staff, and ensures compliance with all University, conference, and association policies, rules, and regulations.

Responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Develop a schedule of intercollegiate athletics contests which supports the established goals for the athletic program, coordinate specific game dates among the various athletic teams and with other universities and colleges, ensuring that the schedule includes an appropriate balance of home and away games, that required facilities (i.e., fields, courts, etc.) are available to support the schedule, and the home contests are appropriately staffed by professional and student workers
  • Oversee game-day operations and sports information to ensure work is being done correctly and in a timely manner
  • Ensure that the intramural and eSports programs are managed and operated in a manner that promotes and encourages student involvement
  • Ensure compliance with National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC), United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) and University rules and regulations, particularly those regarding student eligibility to participate in intercollegiate athletics and regulations governing the recruitment of student-athletes and compliance with recruiting rules by providing guidance and training to the coaches
  • Assist with the recruitment of academically qualified student-athletes at the local, regional, and national levels
  • Collect and analyzes data to inform decisions and submit reports on the impact of athletics and recreation participation on student success and campus goals
  • Develop a competent and effective coaching staff by recruiting and hiring qualified head coaches, providing guidance on departmental or University policies and coaching philosophy, encouraging professional development through participation in coaching decisions and recruiting activities, being accessible to coaches as needed, and evaluating and providing assessments of their performance
  • Ensure that the medical care available to student-athletes is appropriate for the activities being conducted by providing the Athletic Trainer with guidance and direction regarding such matters as athletic insurance coverage, proper care, and coverage at athletic events and/or training sessions, and maintenance of athletic training equipment
  • Develop an annual budget for the intercollegiate athletic programs which includes travel, equipment, facility, staffing, etc. and perform budget reconciliations in a timely manner
  • Partner with the development office to raise funds to enhance facilities, purchase equipment, and address any other unmet departmental financial need
  • Support of the individual educational goals of student-athletes
  • Provide opportunities for academic assistance to student-athletes if required and monitoring the academic progress of participating student-athletes

The Director of Athletics and Recreation is responsible to foster high standards of integrity, athletic excellence, and academic success; has strong management and fiscal skills; can develop excellent relationships with both internal and external constituents; and directs and hires coaches who are committed not only to winning but to the welfare of student-athletes and to compliance with the rules.

Typical requirements of this position include a bachelor’s degree or higher plus five years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
