Dirty Deeds!
Here we are. The last week of the PIAA spring sports season and guess what? Mother Nature is having her way with anything and everything. In the past two weeks, we have had over 35 postponements in our baseball and softball championships and there is nothing anyone can do about it. Why? Because everyone knows; you can't fool with Mother Nature!
But, as we head for home (weak attempt), many teams have their own superstitions. There are chants, songs, rituals, that they believe work. From rally caps; to not stepping on a line; to always dressing in the uniform the same way; placing a glove/cap in the same place in the dugout when batting; sitting in the same spot or position. Baseball and softball have more rituals than any other sport. It's tradition. They are deeds. And sometime dirty deeds.
Dirty deeds, they come dirt cheap; dirty deeds, and they come dirt cheap.
A tip of the cap to song master, P. Gib Hart and AC/DC, for sharing this mantra, that may be the chant of the winning baseball or softball team.
That's the thing with baseball/softball teams; traditions and superstitions are alive and well. The pre-game ritual; the chopping block to keep chopping; touching or using the lucky bat; the lucky song (anyone remember the Harvard baseball team - Call Me Maybe); not changing the socks/pants/uniform; dressing the same way; singing the songs; chanting on the way to the game or in the dugout. It's tradition. It's karma.
Dirty deeds, they come dirt cheap; dirty deeds and they come dirt cheap.
Don't fool with rituals and the Gods of the game. They bite you. Do what you do; believe what you believe; dance with those they brought you there.
So, cowboy up; boys and girls! It's championship time! Let those dirty deeds that come dirt cheap; carry the day!
Interscholastic athletics; Keeping traditions alive.
