Spring is Here?

Spring has sprung; the grass has rizz; I wonder where the birdies is? Ah yes, spring is supposedly here, but springtime in Pennsylvania is not the same as springtime in let's say Virginia. Most of the state is still under snow pack or frozen ground. Our baseball coach, Joe Morahan, used to say if we can get on the field by tax day (April 15th), we're doing pretty good. I believe he was right.

Before we spring forward, let's take a quick look back to the winter sports season and recognize some achievements.

Team wrestling championships and a matchup between current champion Canon McMillan and veteran heavyweight, Central Dauphin. What a great match! Wrestling at its best and what we had in mind when the dual championships were created. Congrats to all teams for being there.

Individual wrestling championships had some tremendous bouts and a tip of the cap to Chance Marsteller, Kennard Dale HS, an undefeated, three time champ, who is looking for #4 next year. As well as Thomas Haines, Solanco HS, who will be looking for his 4th title next year. That is some big time stuff! We were proud to host 48,000 fans to cheer them on at the best high school wrestling tournament in the country.

Swimming and diving had Emily Cameron, Warwick and Leah Smith, Oakland Catholic, among others set PIAA records. Freshman, Bradley Buchter, of Trinity, informed the diving community that sister, Ashley, isn't the only champ in their household. Congratulations to all swimmers and divers their teams on a great season full of accomplishments.

Basketball returned to the GIANT Center and much like re-visiting an old friend it had 24 thousand friends show up to say welcome back with some added flair. Many thanks to all the good folks at Market Street Sports, Great Save and Service Electric/PCN for their help with our production. We saw Lower Merion upset their nemesis, Chester, in the 4A game and all games showcased great teams. Thank you all that came, did the Harlem Shake or Gangnam Style on the "fan cam" and we hoop ? you come back. It was fun.

Here's wishing you a Happy Easter and many blessings as we close the Lenten season. Looking forward to seeing you this spring at a celebration of young people doing great things.
