Wantto!
Here we are just completing the AA swimming championships and sitting upon the threshold of the AAA championships when something hits us square in the face like a cold slap of water. What it is, is the realization that the winter sports season is quickly coming to a close and it is indicated by the events of the day.
The PIAA AA swimming championships have just concluded and not without some great efforts by a lot of good folks. Bucknell University secured a bid to the NCAA basketball championships and a berth in March Madness by winning the Patriot League Basketball Tournament. This occurred while the PIAA swimming and diving championships were being contested in the adjacent arena. It was a very busy scene and no one missed a beat. Congrats to all who made this transition possible.
What is important to note is swimmers and divers, as a lot, do not understand the fuss about other sports. They awaken at 5:00 am daily to go to the pool at 5:30 am for a workout and weight training to get their first workout in before the school day. Then, after the school day, we have our second workout and this cycle is repeated for almost 6 months throughout the school year before the PIAA championships.
This cycle has proved that the Pennsylvania swimmer/diver is second to none and the quality of our athletes can challenge any state in the country. It has been suggested that if you can handle the rigorous schedule of the PA athlete you can handle anything. This has resulted in numerous Olympians, NCAA champions and collegiate swimmers that have led their schools to championships of their leagues, conferences, and associations.
That's good stuff!
The dedication to one's sport and the discipline needed to perform at this level all starts with an athlete's "wanto". They "wantto" excel.
Congratulations to all swimmers and divers for their dedication to their craft and the great performances they have shown us. Great athletes, doing great things on the stage of interscholastic athletics.
Interscholastic athletics: Preparation meets opportunity, the result equals success.
