The Beauty of Sport

With Martin Luther King Day upon us, let's take a moment to reflect upon the beauty of sport and interscholastic competition. When in other areas of life there are concerns of segregation or limiting possibilities, we only have to look at the life-long lessons sports have provided us.

For years upon years, there have been illustrations upon illustrations of how the members of a team have worked together as a group, come together as a family, to strive for a common goal. The successes of these individuals, as one team, one unit, one group, teach all of us lessons that transcend everyday life.

We find teammates cross all lines of race, color, gender, creed, religious, ethnic, and socio-economic boundaries to perform as one. That is the beauty of sport. That is the lesson that transcends interscholastic competition.

It's not the name on the back of the uniform, but the name on the front. It's the colors of the team and not the colors of the players. Just look in your own community and see those who play as one; as a team, together under a common bond to achieve a goal. It's terrific.

So upon this important day in American history, the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream Speech", let's recognize those who live it every day in their schools, their classrooms and their teams. They are role models for all of us and illustrate what can be accomplished when we all work together for a common goal.

Come be a part. High schools sports; where goals are scored everyday.
