What A Week!

WOW!!! What a week. In the last 7 to 10 days, these are some of the things that have happened...

A young man from Carlisle, J.D. Hughes, is standing on the tee box of the last hole he is to play in the AAA Boys' Eastern Golf Regional at Golden Oaks Golf Course and hears conversation that 79 may be the cut line to advance to the PIAA Individual Golf Championships. He is already at 78, so what happens? He holes out for a hole in one!! Hit it right in the cup!

It does not end there. He advances to a four person playoff that takes 6 holes and he is the last qualifier from the East region to the AAA PIAA Individual Golf Championships. To complete the story; he shoots 76 - 72, at the 36 hole, stoke play event at Heritage Hills and earns a seventh place medal.

Tell me. Isn't that what athletics is all about? Never quit...

Here's another. Two teams, Wyomissing and Holy Redeemer, tie in total strokes for the Boys AA golf team championship. On the playoff hole where all four players from each team compete in aggregate stroke play, Sam Gallen from Wyomissing lays up on his second shot to approximately 100 yards of the 18th hole at Heritage Hills Golf Resort and Conference Center. Sam then proceeds to hit his 3rd shot in the jar to make birdie and win the championship for his Wyomissing teammates.

C'mon man! It was great theatre. You can't make this stuff up.

Finally, Erica Herr of Council Rock North was a back to back champion by shooting 4 under par on the second day and won the AAA Girls' Championship by 7 strokes. Our 5th back to back girls' champion in 39 years.

We can't wait for the weekend and the team tennis championships. Something great will happen and we will be there to see it. It is what makes interscholastic athletics - the other half of education.

So moms, dads, grandparents, brothers, sisters, friends, fans ; just come to a PIAA Championship and see tomorrow's stars today. It is fantastic!
